Dear Parents, Guardians and Community Members,

I had the privilege of engaging with the staff and students as they celebrated the 100th day of school with 100 minutes of activities in the gym on Tuesday afternoon. After Friday's snow day, many emails flew back and forth among the teachers. Originally we had planned the celebration for Monday afternoon. Now, with the snow day, they wanted to know if we would still be able to celebrate. And, would we celebrate on Monday, which was now the 99th day of school, or wait until Tuesday? Then, there was an early release on Monday and a delay on Tuesday due to more snow. The teachers were not to be deterred, and so we figured out a way to fit the celebration into our shortened day on Tuesday. I wondered, "Why so much fuss?" It would have been so easy to cancel the event and move on. Once I entered the gym, I understood. As usual, the Warren teachers went above and beyond to make learning fun and meaningful for their students. Stations were set up around the gym, and children were encouraged to move about and participate in every station that interested them.

100 books in 100 minutes.

How tall is your tower?

Tallying the number of licks to get to the center of a Tootsie Roll Pop!

One area was set up as a reading room, complete with a bookcase, bean bag chairs, and a plant. Students were challenged to read 100 books in 100 minutes. At another station, students used red solo cups to build the tallest towers they could. In another area, students recorded tally marks as they counted how many licks it took to get to the center of a Tootsie Roll Pop. Other activities included: use 100 toothpicks to create a sculpture, make a necklace out of 100 beads, dribble a basketball 100 times while counting in Spanish, make a poster with 100 pictures of coins stamped in groups of 10.

I was so impressed with the dedication of the teachers, and the high level of energy and engagement among the students. What a great way to celebrate 100 days of learning!
